Are You Able?

"Mom, I bet I can beat you." I remember the words like it was yesterday. Holiday Inn Express. Middle of Iowa. Green carpet in the hallway. My 13 year old son bent low in running position.

"No way", I say. "GO."

It wasn't even close. I was fast. Unbeatable around our AWANA circle at church. Always in the top fastest girls in my class.

And my son left me in the dust.

It became real to me: Use it or Lose it. When was the last time I had really ran; SPRINTED?

I didn't want to be that mom. The mom who can't run, jump, lift something by myself, or play a game of catch. And I certainly don't want to be that grandma!

If I''m going to sit on the sidelines, I want it to be because I choose to, not because I'm unable to participate.


I recently had a 40 year old client who has a son graduating from high school and going off to college. My client's weight, lack of physical activity, and overall health were keeping him from quality time with his son.

He said to me, with tears in his eyes, that going Primal had saved his life. He was so grateful for making the choice to change his lifestyle because he wouldn't have been able to spend the last several months doing the things his son liked to do - playing baseball and throwing the football around.

I'm 45. Last summer we began playing Ultimate Frisbee in our backyard with my grown sons and their friends. I'm not very good with the frisbee, but I LOVE the game. Having the endurance to keep up with boys in their 20s, my daughters-in-law, and my husband is really empowering!
